Hank Funk is a successful Abbotsford businessman who has translated his love of automotive gear and graphic design into Cap-it, a $70 million truck accessories company with 26 stores across Canada. He has been instrumental in developing North America’s light truck aftermarket sector, a $33 billion industry, and continues to play a major role in fuelling the excitement and enthusiasm that keeps it growing every year.
In the process he’s mastered retailing, marketing, store design, started an inventory distribution business (Western Warehouse) and built a national franchising system that enables owners to achieve success. All without sacrificing his principles or love for art and design. In fact, he cites creativity as the main reason for Cap-it’s growth and success.

With knowledgeable staff, fantastic products, great service, our stores gain the trust of their communities as the go-to Truck Accessory business.
BTB: How and when did you become involved with Cap-it franchise?
HF: I started manufacturing canopies in the ‘70’s and as I saw the niche of Truck accessories growing, we expanded our product lines to where we are today, with over 50,000 items (and growing).
BTB: What was your background prior to joining Cap-it franchise?
HF: Having fun, sharing knowledge and success have always been the cornerstone of my business drive. I have been in multiple other retail businesses, including Dufferin Billiards & Poolmart, but the pull of Truck Accessories business brought me back to start the Cap-it brand.
BTB: What are some of the advantages in being a Cap-it franchisee?
HF: To be competitive in the Truck Accessories (Automotive) business, you need to have distribution, strong supplier relationships, technology and proven operating systems. Our Cap-it system gives our Franchisees the tools they need to be competitive and successful in any market.
BTB: Who is your ideal franchisee?
HF: I am proud to state that our company has achieved its success through the pride of ownership we have seen in our store owners. Their passion, focus, dedication to excellence to make a difference in the lives of their customers and communities are second to none. These are the positive attributes that we look for in a successful franchisee.
BTB: Tell us a little about the Truck Accessories Market?
HF: The Truck Accessory and aftermarket industry continues to grow leaps and bounds with the continued explosion of new truck sales in North America. Not only do we see growth in the truck accessories industry, but we are focused on the lifestyle products that enhance our customer’s activities.
BTB: What are some of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in growing this franchise?
HF: One of the driving forces behind launching the Cap-it brand as a franchise simply stems from wanting to share this fun, profitable business with like-minded individuals and give them a system so they don’t have to make the same mistakes that I had to make building mine.
BTB: Who has inspired you to be the person you are today?
HF: I have had many mentors in my life and all of them were successful in their own fields. Dr Robert Schuller played a big role in my life, he was the one that encouraged me with “if you can dream it, you can do it”.
BTB: What advice do you have for someone looking to acquire a franchise?
HF: When you are ready to make the time and investment commitment to becoming an entrepreneur, find a business that you love and will continue to love. Not only will your new business define who you are, but if you truly love what you do, you will never work another day in your life and success will follow.
