Lane Martin – Co-Founder at Modern PURAIR
Lane Martin is a second-generation Indoor Air Quality expert. His father, and Co-founder, of Modern PURAIR®, was one of the first people in Canada to own an HVAC cleaning truck in Calgary, Alberta in 1969. Lane grew up in the business and thoroughly knows the industry. He quickly identified the gaps in the industry and set out to create Canada’s only nationally branded coast to coast IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) business. Lane has four kids and lives in Kelowna, BC with his wife April and his bulldog Bruiser.
BeTheBoss: Tell us about the Modern PURAIR® concept.
Lane Martin: Modern PURAIR® is Western Canada’s leader in the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Cleaning Business. With our exclusive cleaning systems and trademarked product lines, we are well on our way to becoming a nationally recognized household name. Our positioning line: “Clean Air. We live and breathe it®.” identifies our company and how passionate we are about building this coast-to-coast national network.
BeTheBoss: How and when did you become involved with Modern PURAIR®?
Lane Martin: Modern PURAIR® started in May of 2001 in Kelowna, British Columbia. My father Don Martin and I had been in the HVAC cleaning business before; and in fact, Don had been the first one in the industry in Western Canada, when he purchased a truck in 1969 for the Calgary market. Together we created a system that could be duplicated over and over while ensuring each and every customer experienced the Modern PURAIR® way. In the fall of 2007, our dream of the Modern PURAIR® franchise came true. Our new brand image, new logo, and all of our new trade-marked systems were in place to allow us to grow Canada’s premiere Indoor Air Quality franchise system.
BeTheBoss: What was your background prior to joining Modern PURAIR®?
Lane Martin: I purchased a furnace and duct cleaning franchise in 1993, and we grew it to become a household name in our marketplace by 1998. We sold that venture in 1998, and from there I became a regional manager for a large, retail company. When I was the DM for that company, I was in charge of over 180 employees and $300 million in inventory. IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) is in my blood, and we came back to the business in 2001.
BeTheBoss: What are some of the advantages in being a Modern PURAIR ® franchisee?
Lane Martin: Our business model is turn-key; the PURAIR® vehicles come fully equipped with our trade-marked and exclusive equipment, low over-head costs, and little to no experience required. The number 1 advantage to being a Modern PURAIR® franchisee is the support and training you receive, not only from myself and business partner Don, but from the large network of other franchisees and our award winning Sales Centre. Other very important advantages are:
- The power of being the number one brand in the industry
- A recession-resistant business that focuses on three significant and expanding industry segments; property restoration, indoor air quality testing, and energy efficiency
- A complete inventory of HVAC cleaning products and services including air duct cleaning, sealing and deodorizing, high-efficiency filtration; dryer vent cleaning; and evaporator coil cleaning
- Protected marketing territories and large service areas
- Local promotional materials designed to help establish and grow your business
- An in-bound sales center to answer calls, book appointments and help free up your time to generate revenue
- Start-up costs are low and space requirements are minimal – a perfect home-based business
- New state of the art corporate headquarters, including our in-bound sales center
- Massive profit margins and trademarked cleaning systems – all leaving the competition “in the dust.”
BeTheBoss: Who is your ideal franchisee?
Lane Martin: Our ideal franchisee is a coachable, motivated, self-starter, who enjoys working hard and enjoying a great lifestyle. Some experience in management or sales would be an asset, but not necessary. Our franchise training program and ongoing support means no experience required. Essentially, we are looking for white collar entrepreneurial style franchise partners, that are willing to be blue collar for their first 3-6 months in the business.
BeTheBoss: Tell us a little about the Air Quality Market?
Lane Martin: The Indoor Air Quality Industry represents a $7 billion dollar industry (2011) and continues to grow. Modern PURAIR® blows our competitors away with on-time appointments, up front rates, friendly and knowledgeable team members, and clean and shiny PURAIR® vehicles. Modern PURAIR® franchisees are able to offer HVAC cleaning, coil cleaning, filter maintenance programs, indoor air quality testing, dryer vent cleaning, exhaust vent cleaning, and HVAC remediation to residential, commercial, strata & property management, restoration, and industrial clients.
BeTheBoss: What are some of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in growing this franchise?
Lane Martin: It’s all about the people. You may have the greatest product or service, but with no people, you have nothing – so continue to work and grow your team and your culture.
BeTheBoss: Do you have a mentor and is there someone you use for inspiration?
Lane Martin: Cameron Herold is a huge mentor of mine, and for inspiration there are several – Ray Kroc, Frank DeLuca, and Brian Scudamore to name a few.
BeTheBoss: What advice do you have for someone looking to acquire a Franchise?
Lane Martin: Do your homework. Listen to your gut. Do your homework on the franchisor. Interview other franchise partners. Don’t get caught up in the “emotion” of the brand… Make sure you can see yourself being excited about your new venture… every day.
BeTheBoss: In your opinion, why do you think that PURAIR® would be a great opportunity for someone?
Lane Martin: Little to NO competition in our industry. Our system is “turn-key”; plug into it, follow the procedures, and be amazed at the profitability. More trucks means more money. I myself also run a location, and the lifestyle that franchise gives me is incredible. It’s fully about the WORK/LIFE CULTURE balance.
