Paul Clissold - MVP Men’s Hair Salon

Date: JUN 11th, 2013

Topic: Interview with a CEO

Paul was born in Edmonton, Alberta into a family that didn’t know anything other than running a business. Always an entrepreneur, Paul launched his first business at the age of 10 by going door to door with a red wagon selling fire extinguishers. After a move to B.C., he bought his first franchise at the age of 21. After 11 years as a franchisee in three different locations, Paul decided to try something new. After an aha moment in 2006, Paul realized that there was not a quality hair cutting place that really catered to me. It was that time that MVP Men’s Hair Salon was born.

BeTheBoss: Tell us about the MVP Men’s Hair Salon concept.

Paul Clissold: We are not your father’s barbershop. MVP is a place for men to get a quality haircut in a space built for men. There isn’t any chrome and soft colours here. The waiting room features TV’s, wireless internet, Playstation, magazines, beverages and comfortable seating if you need to wait. Our signature Hall of Fame Haircut goes above and beyond b y including a professional consultation, shampoo, condition, scalp massage, hot face towel, cut style and blow dry.

BTB: How and when did you become involved with MVP Men’s Hair Salon?

PC: I was a co founder of the company in 2006 with my brother, Neil Clissold.

BTB: What was your background prior to joining MVP Men’s Hair Salon?

PC: Prior to starting MVP, I was a franchise partner in a restaurant. While I have been involved in family business since before I can remember, I purchased my first franchised restaurant in 1995 and stayed in that system until 2005. It gives me a unique perspective on franchises as I am able to see it from both perspectives.

BTB: What are some of the advantages in being a MVP Men’s Hair Salon franchisee?

PC: We provide a business that doesn’t require being in the four walls, full time. We sell a business system that is a relatively easy to run, so that our franchise partners can have a quality work/life balance.

BTB: Who is your ideal franchisee?

PC: The ideal franchise partner would be someone that has a passion for quality service. MVP provides quality training and work shoulder to shoulder with our franchise partners on operations and financial management. As long as the franchise partner is dedicated to service, we can help with the rest.

BTB: Tell us a little about the male grooming market?

PC: We are in a relatively young market. The male grooming industry is booming. More and more men are realizing that there is a segment dedicated to providing services that men could not find before. We are filling an untapped market.

BTB: What are some of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in growing this franchise?

PC: I have learned that working with our franchise partners, we are providing service that men didn’t know they could find. Our success depends on the success of our franchise partners. They are the ones that create our brand.

BTB: Do you have a mentor and is their someone you use for inspiration?

PC: My Mother and Father have always been an inspiration. They have always been in business for themselves and have taught me that the client comes first. My father always told staff “If you can’t come into work and smile at your boss, that is your boss being the client, you don’t belong here.” Everything revolves around the client.

BTB: What advice do you have for someone looking to acquire a Franchise?

PC: Do your research. What is the history of the franchisor? Talk to franchisees as well. They can be your best source of information.

BTB: In your opinion, why do you think that MVP Men’s Hair Salon would be a great opportunity for someone?

PC: MVP is an opportunity that allows people to choose their level of involvement. Full time or part time works with us. The ease of operation is key. You are not a slave to the four walls of the business. Oh yeah, we have fun doing this too.
