Wolf Nickel - Founder & CEO of STOR-X Organizing Systems

In 1989 Pacific Closet Works Ltd. (later STOR-X Organizing Systems) was established by Wolf Nickel with a goal of providing versatile, economic, custom fit organizing solutions for residential customers as well as builders. The relationship with the industry provided a strong foundation for growth, and STOR-X is now sold in over 40 cities accross North America through dealers, corporate stores and franchisees.

Recently with a recognized demand for additional operational and marketing support and shared national advertising, the STOR-X franchise model was a natural evolution. Today STOR-X is recognized as an industry leader, pioneering innovative design, LEAN and GREEN manufacturing practices.

BeTheBoss.ca: Tell us about the STOR-X concept.

Wolf Nickel: The STOR-X brand and concept grew out of the idea that the modern household has a myriad of challenging areas that require organization and storage, from the Garage to the Bedroom. STOR-X Organizing Systems has been developed to creatively and effectively do just that. STOR-X, store anything!

BTB: How and when did you become involved with STOR-X?

WN: I started STOR-X in 1989 with the notion that I wanted to run my own successful business and have never looked back.

BTB: What was your background prior to joining STOR-X Organizing Systems?

WN: I was brought up in a family, with a very strong work ethic, and spent my youth working in the family cabinet business. After a number of years of post-secondary education trying to find my calling, I returned to work in the family business. There, I gained the experience and laid the groundwork for the knowledge base that I would need to set out on my own.

WN: The ideal STOR-X Franchisee is someone who enjoys sales and design, has a passion for organization and loves working with people and helping them create peace of mind through organized spaces.

BTB: Tell us a little about the market.

WN: The Home Organization Industry has been growing steadily since its origins in the early 1980’s. From the Do it Yourself products at your local Home center to Organizational products online, to full home services, a multibillion dollar product niche has grown into a major player, with marketing thrusts from IKEA to Heineken to Home Depot. The statistics prove it, everyone wants to be organized. Our industry provides the tools to do it.

BTB: What are some of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in growing this franchise?

WN:The greatest lesson I have learned from growing this Franchise, is to be consistent in the message of what we offer, and to never waiver from what I know makes what we do successful.

BTB: Do you have a mentor and is there someone you use for inspiration?

WN: I have been blessed with a family that has made success look easy, particularly my Father, who immigrated to Canada with five children at the age of forty, and created a successful business with limited education, and a simple work ethic. This is a hard act to follow.

BTB: What advice do you have for someone looking to acquire a franchise?

WN: Becoming a Franchisee is a commitment to a system that has to match your skills and values. Do your homework. Ask a lot of questions. Clearly define what it is you want to achieve in getting into your own business and make sure that the franchise opportunity you choose to pursue is going to provide you with the lifestyle you want.
