MVP Modern Barbers - Chief Executive Officer, Nick Short

Topic: Interview with a CEO

With more than 25 years in the financial services industry in both South Africa and Canada I decided to opt out of the institutional environment and into the world of small business. Jodi on the other hand has always wanted to be a stylist. She worked in a number of studios/salons before joining Paul Clissold at MVP Kelowna as their first stylist. After 5 years she had built a very successful client base but decided to move back to Vancouver to be closer to her family. It was a logical move to start our own MVP here in the Vancouver area.

Under Paul and the MVP Modern Barbers leadership team they have positioned the MVP brand to become one of the top men’s hair salon franchises in Canada. With outlets in Kelowna, Calgary and Surrey and recently downtown Vancouver, they believe in building the brand. In addition, offering leading edge “men focused” products and services in an environment dedicated built for men, and with our clients support we will continue to position MVP Modern Barbers as a Leader in the Canadian Men’s Barbers Marketplace.

BeTheBoss: Tell us about MVP Modern Barbers concept?

Nick Short:The concept is simple, MVP is a hair salon built for men in a convenient location, We provide a manly environment (including booked scheduled appointments (although walk-in’s are welcome), comfortable chairs, multiple large screen TV`s, TV`s at every chair, video game console, free wireless, free hot and cold beverages) as well as quality hair products and current experienced hair styling services, all at a very competitive price. Bookings can also be made online or from your smart phone.

BTB: How and when did you become involved with MVP Modern Barbers?

NS:I became involved with MVP while observing my daughter working as the very first stylist in the Kelowna location. When the opportunity came for her to relocate to the Lower Mainland, we applied to MVP head office to set up an MVP Salon in South Surrey. This was in 2010. Jodi is the franchisee and the face of the salon. I provide her the backup marketing and administrative support. We have seen excellent client growth and loyalty since we opened. So much so, that we have now opened our second MVP location in downtown Vancouver.

BTB: What are some of the advantages in being a MVP Modern Barbers franchisee?

NS:MVP Modern Barbers gives you the freedom to own your own business and provides excellent support for those just getting started. From site selection to local by-laws and construction they walk with you every step of the way. The leadership team is just a phone call away when you need them. Their feedback and advice is always quick, direct and usually on the money.

BTB: Tell us a little about the Men’s Hair Industry?

NS:The growing popularity of specialized hairstyling services for men has contributed to the exponential growth in this sector of the industry. In addition, the hair business is almost a recession proof business. The need for guys to always look good and feel good is important and a guy’s loyalty to his stylist keeps him coming back for more. In our Surrey location, we have seen our client base grow to more than 3000 regular clients in two and half years.

BTB: What advice do you have for someone looking to acquire a Franchise?

NS:The advice that I would give someone who is looking into acquiring a franchise is very simple:

  • Make sure you are comfortable representing the Franchisee, selling the product and the service.
  • Make sure you have the best location, because your success will bring out the competition.
  • Make sure you will be able to work with the franchisor as a partner.
  • .....and never give up.
