As a young business owner, Ken developed and ran a chain of health clubs in California and Texas. Along with a partner, Mr. BrockBank then built his own shipping Franchise group consisting of 12 separate US cities in various states to annual revenues of over $10 million. Simultaneously he joined the corporate team for the Franchisor, as the Vice President over sales and marketing where he grew the company from $85 million, to over $250 million in just 4 years.


Seven years ago Ken founded InXpress, an international shipping franchise system which currently includes 15 countries, with over 200 franchisees and revenues over $100 million. BeTheBoss: Tell us about the InXpress concept.

InXpress is a freight and transportation consultancy franchise system. Our franchisees sell discounted freight services to small and mid-sized businesses. We provide unique solutions and savings to the small and mid-sized customers. BeTheBoss: How and when did you become involved with InXpress?

I trained the first franchisee in England for another franchise system in 1999. A few short years later I then joined them and negotiated a separation from the existing franchise system to create InXpress. After fine tuning the system with some major improvements, we brought it US in the fall of 2006. We are now have over 200 franchisees in 15 countries doing over $100 million in revenues!

BeTheBoss: What was your background prior to joining InXpress?

I have been an entrepreneur in sales and marketing for the last 30 years. I have been in franchising for the last 23 years. I started in franchising as a franchisee for a company called Unishippers in the US. I bought four major franchises on the West coast and started selling myself while managing 5 sales reps. We grew our margin exponentially and soon I became the national sales trainer. After one year as the trainer, I joined the franchisor as the VP of sales and marketing and we took the company from $85 million to $240 million in 4 years!

BeTheBoss: Tell us a little about the Shipping Market?

The Canadian transportation market is $154 billion and a very small percentage of your local market will make you an incredible income! DHL has only a small percentage of the market, which allows us to sell to the majority of the market. We have an excellent rapport with DHL and they are excited to work with us in developing the Canadian market. We will be offering the two highest profit margin products of the market; International express (under 200 kilos) and domestic heavy freight (over 75 kilos).


BeTheBoss: What are some of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in growing this franchise?

That no matter what I think I know and how long I have been in the industry, there is always much to learn! For this reason I attend the CFA and IFA conventions as well as local chapters of both. I also attend multiple trainings and seminars each year. I have also learned that not all franchisors do this, which is surprising to me. I have also learned that you can never tell who will or won’t be a successful franchisee; sometimes those with the most experience and skill sets are not the most successful. Conversely, sometime those with no experience and lacking greatly the skillsets needed learn and follow, becoming the top producers!


BeTheBoss: Do you have a mentor and is their someone you use for inspiration?

Yes, I have many mentors and people who inspire me and I will continue to do so. I have distant mentors like Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar and Tony Robbins. I have mentors that I work with personally on a regular basis to stay sharp, on track and improve. I am a student of self – improvement and am always trying to get better and become the best I can be.


BeTheBoss: What advice do you have for someone looking to acquire a Franchise?

  • Do your due diligence. This is a lifetime commitment and you need to make sure it is something that you will enjoy doing.
  • Make sure the culture and vision of the franchisor aligns with yours.
  • Make sure you set BHAG’s (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) that inspire you and compel you past the challenges.
