Cora, the national chain of breakfast and lunch eateries, recently celebrated the grand opening of its second restaurant in Dartmouth. The new restaurant is located at 16 Garland Ave. in Burnside.

The grand opening is part of the nationwide expansion of the Cora network. The Burnside location represents the 12th restaurant to open its doors in the Maritimes and the 95th in Canada.

Nicholas Tsouflidis, president and son of founder Cora Tsouflidou, along with the Cora team and the franchisee, Ginette Bowering, proudly welcomed customers and Dartmouth dignitaries to the opening ceremony. It featured the symbolic cracking of eggs for the first omelette officially created in the restaurant.

As a demonstration of its support and dedication to the Dartmouth community, the Cora team presented a cheque to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax. The donations were raised during a special Friends and Family Event, hosted the previous day.

Joining Dartmouth’s dignitaries, city influencers and all the major contributors to the restaurant opening were Cora team members David Polny, executive vice president of Cora Franchise Group; Ryan Shorten, director of Operations; and Jim Mcdonald, Atlantic Provinces Area Developer.

“Atlantic Canada has always been special to us. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to continue our growth in this region recognized for its great hospitality,” says Cora Tsouflidou. Since the inception of her company 21-years-ago, she has won numerous food and hospitality awards, as well as the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

“This is a fantastic development for the Cora restaurants. With the opening of the Dartmouth location, we now have 95 restaurants in eight provinces. All of the different cities in Atlantic Canada have warmly welcomed us and our all-day breakfast concept; even exceeding our expectations! The fact we can share our great breakfast concept, create jobs and support entrepreneurs makes us very proud. Initiative, perseverance, confidence and a healthy dash of energy are the features we look for in a franchisee,” Cora Tsouflidou says. “We’re just thrilled we’ve found such traits in Ginette Bowering, who already owns the other Cora restaurant in Dartmouth.”

Cora Tsouflidou originated the concept in 1987 when, as a single mother of three in need of a career, she bought a small abandoned snack bar on Côte-Vertu Boulevard in Montréal’s St-Laurent area focusing solely on breakfasts: fresh fruit, cheeses, cereal, omelettes, crêpes and French toast. The restaurant quickly became the talk of the town, often having line-ups to get in, and Tsouflidou’s astute entrepreneurial instincts told her that this was a concept that could be franchised.

Since 2005, Cora Franchise Group has been recognized among Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies. The Cora restaurant chain is famous for its all-day breakfast fare that boasts mounds of fresh fruit artfully prepared by on-site specially trained “fruiters.”

Over the years, inspired by family traditions, health trends, customer requests and suggestions from her children, Tsouflidou has conjured up more than 100 menu ideas; most of which still today bear the names of the customers or family members who inspired her.

Today, the chain includes 54 restaurants in Quebec; 27 in Ontario; four in New Brunswick; four in Nova Scotia; one in Prince-Edward Island, two in Newfoundland, two in Manitoba and one in Calgary. The restaurants operate as Chez Cora in Québec and Cora Breakfast & Lunch in all other provinces. Cora Breakfast and Lunch offers customers top quality food and service in a cozy family setting Monday to Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
