FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Retailer of the Year for 2010

Victoria, BC January 11, 2011 – Doreen Samways, who oversees the operations of five Great Canadian Dollar Stores for franchise members Donald and Jacqueline Spencer, has been recognized by Traders Forum as “Retailer of the Year 2010”. Doreen, based in Newfoundland, is responsible for stores in Bay Roberts, Goulds, Gander, Bonavista and Deer Lake.

After numerous years in retail, of which 24 years were with a privately owned department store in Bay Roberts, NL, Doreen received a call from the Spencers who were interested in opening dollar stores. Ten years later, Doreen is still with them and Great Canadian Dollar Store.
Doreen credits much of her retail success with hard work, perseverance and a team that is committed to both the stores and their customers.

Her love of retail is apparent when you look around any of the five stores that fall under Doreen’s umbrella of responsibility.  Being aware of potential trends and understanding what customers are looking for, along with well merchandised and competitively priced products are skills used daily to improve on the operation of the stores.

Of course ensuring their customers’ shopping experiences live up to their expectations and what she herself would expect while shopping is key.  “You have to be as hands-on as possible and know what your customers’ needs are.  We want our customers to come back again and again because they can go anywhere and spend their money,” says Doreen.

Great Canadian Dollar Store, established in 1993, has over 100 franchise stores from coast to coast. The Home Office is based in Victoria, BC.
