BeTheBoss: Tell us about the Homes & Land Canada Magazine concept.

Dave Mossey: For 40 years, Homes & Land has been the #1 Real Estate publication in North America. A low cost investment, Franchisees provide industry leading print, online and marketing exposure for Agents and their clients.

BTB: How and when did you become involved with Homes & Land Canada Magazine?

DM: Our group became involved late 2012, by purchasing the existing Master franchise company for Canada. My background as a realtor had me very familiar with the brand and the success it has garnered. We have other franchise holdings and my experience with those brands gave me the confidence to get involved with H&L Canada and the potential it has for our franchisees.

BTB: What was your background prior to joining Homes & Land Canada Magazine?

DM: I am a licensed Realtor and own two other franchise companies with my partner, Joe Klassen, for many years. Together we have over 50 years of experience in franchising.

BTB: What are some of the advantages in being a Homes & Land Canada Magazine franchisee?

DM: I think the biggest advantage is the life style that H&L allows its franchisee’s. The business model allows the franchisee to operate with very little overhead and typically work from home with very little support staff.

BTB: Who is your ideal franchisee?

DM: An ideal franchisee shows a passion for life and people. They should have excellent communication skills also have an understanding of real estate and sales in general.

BTB: Tell us a little about the Real Estate Publication Market?

DM: With little competition in our marketplace. Homes & Land Canada is the leader in Real Estate Publications for our end consumer to find the information they require, whether it be through our Magazine Publication or our Regional Websites for listings.

BTB: What are some of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in growing this franchise?

DM: Support and training are integral to our success. Our franchise does not succeed unless our franchisees have been expertly trained to succeed. As a franchisor we must build a business model that can be successful through profitability, making our franchisees happy with their decision to choose us.

BTB: Do you have a mentor and is their someone you use for inspiration?

DM: I do not have one person in particular that stands outs, but rather a large collection of mentors and people that have inspired me. I still try to learn every day from everyone I meet and pull inspiration from the stories I hear from many people.

BTB: What advice do you have for someone looking to acquire a Franchise?

DM: Do your research; ask to speak to existing franchisees within the system. They will give you the answers you need, without bias.

BTB: In your opinion, why do you think that Homes & Land Canada Magazine would be a great opportunity for someone?

DM: H&L gives you an opportunity to build remarkable relationships with your market. Our franchise allows a franchisee a lifestyle conducive to a healthy work/life balance. It also benefits from successful branding and market reach in our industry.
